Symptom: Elevated liver enzymes

    Elevated liver enzymes may indicate inflammation or damage to cells in the liver. Inflamed or injured liver cells leak higher than normal amounts of certain chemicals, including liver enzymes, into the bloodstream, which can result in elevated liver enzymes on blood tests.

    The specific elevated liver enzymes most commonly found are:

    Elevated liver enzymes may be discovered during routine blood testing. In most cases, liver enzyme levels are only mildly and temporarily elevated. Most of the time, elevated liver enzymes don't signal a chronic, serious liver problem.

    More common causes of elevated liver enzymes include:

    1. Certain prescription medications, including statin drugs used to control cholesterol
    2. Drinking alcohol
    3. Heart failure
    4. Hepatitis A
    5. Hepatitis B
    6. Hepatitis C
    7. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
    8. Obesity
    9. Over-the-counter pain medications, particularly acetaminophen (Tylenol, others)

    Other causes of elevated liver enzymes may include:

    1. Alcoholic hepatitis (severe liver inflammation caused by excessive alcohol consumption)
    2. Autoimmune hepatitis (liver inflammation caused by an autoimmune disorder)
    3. Celiac disease (small intestine damage caused by gluten)
    4. Cirrhosis (early stages of liver scarring)
    5. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
    6. Dermatomyositis (inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness and skin rash)
    7. Epstein-Barr virus
    8. Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
    9. Heart attack
    10. Hemochromatosis (too much iron stored in your body)
    11. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
    12. Liver cancer
    13. Mononucleosis
    14. Pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation)
    15. Polymyositis (inflammatory disease that causes muscle weakness)
    16. Toxic hepatitis (liver inflammation caused by drugs or toxins)
    17. Wilson's disease (too much copper stored in your body)
